Wilbur has one Sponsor
Wilbur is a good example of a sanctuary dog.
Like most sanctuary dogs, Wilbur has a few issues.
His issues began as a puppy. He was severely mistreated, to the extent that his hip
was shattered. Fortunately for Wilbur, he was rescued, and was loved and treated
well by his new owners.
Unfortunately, Wilbur could not overcome the trust issues that were destroyed
during his puppyhood. Time and kindness just could not heal the damage that had
been done. Because he continued to be fearful, he lashed out and bit his new
owners on several occasions. They loved him, and they hoped that eventually
Wilbur would realize that he was safe with them. But, after Wilbur assaulted his
owner's mother, they realized they had no choice. They could no longer keep him.
This was a grueling decision for them. Traditional rescues are not set up to deal with dogs like Wilbur, so they
searched to find a place for him where he could live out his life without danger of being put to sleep. Even so, the
decision to send Wilbur to Smiling Dog Farms very difficult ... but they knew Wilbur needed to be in a place where
he could just be himself, and where his trust issues would not be a danger to others. So in 2009, Wilbur came to
live here at the farm.
He's not overly fond of people, but that’s okay. We let Wilbur choose whether he wants to be friendly, or not. He
lives a happy life guarding his feeder bin all day.
Dogs like Wilbur are the primary reason Smiling Dog Farms exists. Without a sanctuary to go to, Wilbur’s owners
would have run out of options for him. Fortunately for Wilbur, they believed ... as do we ... that all dogs deserve a
chance at life.
