Polar has three Sponsors This beautiful little guy is Polar! Polar’s birthday is August 6th and this year (2011) he’ll be three years old. He is a beautiful Border Collie/Aussie/Heeler cross that weighs about 45 to 50 pounds. He has come to Smiling Dog Farms all the way from Montana! Polar is a real sweetheart. He’s affectionate and happy. He’s completely house trained and is crate trained (for bedtime only). Polar is very energetic and VERY smart and would probably do well in agility training, although he hasn’t had an opportunity to try that out yet. He loves to play with other dogs and still has a lot of puppy energy - but he’s starting to mellow out. He loves to be close to his people and makes a great companion. He’ll follow you everywhere.  He gives lots of kisses and especially enjoys having his back scratched ... and eating apples and watermelon with you! He isn’t afraid of loud noises, like thunder or vacuum cleaners.  That’s because Polar is DEAF!  And because he’s deaf, it’s a little scary for him if he doesn’t know where his people are. Because he can’t hear them, he needs to see them. He needs to be able to see their hand signals and make eye contact. You can see by his intent expression that he’s concentrating completely. He wants to please you. He needs to be with someone who loves dogs and who is patient and kind - someone who understands that you can NOT beat, hit, spank, or discipline a deaf dog for not hearing your commands. It’s not his fault he’s deaf! Deaf dogs need people who can and will take the time to teach them correctly, and with love and kindness. Polar has come to Smiling Dog Farms as the result of a very unfortunate incident! He was happily living with his mom and dad, who shared their home with him and four other “special needs” dogs. He had people who loved him and doggie friends to play with. They let him go with them everywhere. And Polar and his dad had a special bond - they were great buddies! But then the accident occurred!  A visitor came to their home, and foolishly walked right into their yard, even though it was clearly posted on the gate to WAIT and not enter until the owner came to let them in. All five dogs were outside and they rushed to greet this intruder. They were just doing what dogs do ... guarding their home. Polar was at the front of the pack and as he jumped up to check the lady out, he had his mouth wide open. At the same moment he jumped up, she bent down, and their faces collided. That’s when the accident happened! Polar’s top teeth caught in the lady’s lower lip, tearing it. Everybody agreed that it was an accident. Even the doctor and the insurance company said so. But it still didn’t matter! Polar got blamed for hurting the lady, so his mom and dad were told that they had to re-home him or he would be put to sleep! Polar’s dad and mom are devastated by this chain of events, and have taken the whole situation very hard. It’s extremely upsetting for them to have to send Polar away. He is their baby, after all. Determined to find a safe new home for him, they searched and thankfully found Smiling Dog Farms. They contacted Jay and Ricky to see if they could make room for this sweet boy, and of course, they said “YES”! Here at the farm, Polar gets another chance for a happy life. His mom and dad have already paid for Polar’s big new townhome. They’ve asked Jay and Ricky to build his new townhome in an extra large play yard so that he’ll have plenty of room to run and play. And maybe after he gets nicely settled in, they’ll be able to find him a roommate to play and snuggle with so that, while he waits for a new family to find him, he won’t miss his family in Montana so much. The incident that got him sent away from his home was a one-time happening. It was an accident, pure and simple. He is not considered to be a dangerous dog ... a little exuberant perhaps, but definitely not dangerous. Polar has been placed into the New Directions Adoption Program here at the farm with the hope that we can find him a second family that will love and understand him just as much as his first family does. If you, or anyone you know, are interested in providing a new permanent home for this special boy, please contact Jay or Ricky at adoptions@smilingdogfarms.org for more information.
