Opal has two Sponsors
This is Opal.
She was pulled from a shelter in Harris County, Texas by Italian Greyhound Rescue.
Robin, the lady who was to foster her very quickly discovered that Opal is very dog
aggressive. She just couldn’t keep Opal because she had other dogs in her care. Opal
needed to be moved quickly, but they were unable to find another foster for her on such
short notice. If no place could be found for her their only choice was to send Opal back to
the shelter ... where she would probably be euthanized.
So they contacted Ricky and Jay to see if they could make room at Smiling Dog Farms for
Opal in a hurry, since it was an emergency situation. Well, of course they said “yes” and
found a way to provide temporary housing for Opal while funding for her townhome and play
yard is raised by her rescuers. Robin, and her daughter, Morgan, brought Opal to the farm.
There are several stories floating around about Opal ... one is that she had acid poured on
her ... another is that she had gasoline dumped on her. Ricky and Jay think that she
probably has a severe case of sunburn!
They have seen injuries like this before and have had a vet tell them they were most likely
caused by severe sun scorch on the skin, which caused major blistering. This is usually an
indication that the dog was tied up with no shade.
A dog will always seek shade to get out of blistering sun
... unless the dog is tied or penned in such a manner that
there is no way it can get to shade. People who will allow any animal to suffer burns like
this (no matter what the cause) are just criminal!
Opal is now at Smiling Dog Farms, where she is safe.
She has been put into a pen with jumper panels
because she’s an escape artist and quickly figured out
how to climb up the fence. (Probably the reason her
previous owner tied her up!)
You can see Ricky already giving her the first sulphur
paste treatment soon after her arrival. This treatment helped Victor, one of our adoptable
dogs that came last year with similar injuries. It helped him a LOT! He has regrown about
80% of the hair he lost. The hope is that once her wounds heal up, Opal’s hair will start to grow back again.

It will be awhile before we’ll be able to determine whether Opal is adoptable. Since she’s a “shelter” dog, no one really
knows much about her personality or temperment. She seems very sweet and friendly with people, so far. We DO know she
positively hates other dogs! She will need to be kept away from other dogs and will need double fail safe ways of securing
the yard, etc. There can be no mistakes with Opal ... because of her breed, she wont get second chances. It will have to be
a very special, experienced owner who can handle the necessity of keeping her away from other dogs at all times.
Opal is trying to raise funding so she
can have a townhome and play yard.
Please consider helping her get out of
temporary housing!
Opal needs sponsors to help fund her day-to-day expenses while she lives with us on the farm.
If you can help, please sign on to be a Monthly Sponsor for her, or make a one-time donation in her name.
Opal will be ever so appreciative and will send you many hugs and big sloppy kisses!
