Katherine NEEDS Sponsors This sweet girl is Katherine. Katherine came here from a local kill shelter a couple years ago. She was nearly feral and wanted no part of people. We teamed Katherine up with Wally, an aggressive dog from Alabama who wanted no part of people... It was instantly marriage made in heaven. Katherine adored Wally. They were like Edith and Archie Bunker. She catered to him, stood behind him and smiled ... she would groom him and he would stand there as if he was indifferent, but you could see in his eyes and his manner that despite his gruff, tough veneer, he loved her as much as she loved him. Sometimes she would come to the fence as if she was curious to sniff us, but Wally would charge over as if to tell her "Are you nuts? Dont get close to THEM!!" And Katherine would happily accede to his wishes. Tragedy struck when Wally died unexpectedly. He was relatively young and had no outward signs of illness. We had Dr. Stern do an autopsy because we had to know what happened. The verdict? He died from hypertrophic cardiomyopothy. In layman’s terms, he was born with a heart too small to support him! Katherine was devastated. She could not understand why we took Wally away from her. She moped for weeks, grieving over Wally. Eventually, a dog named Bear came to live at the farm. Bear is similar to Wally in some ways, so we introduced Bear to Katherine. She has accepted him as her friend and they get along well ... but it is nothing like the love she felt for Wally. The interesting thing is that since losing Wally, Katherine has become much more people friendly. She allows us to touch her and hold her and pet her and love on her! Somehow her experience with Wally transformed her. We believe that she has overcome her distrust of people and is now the perfect candidate to have a family of her own. She has now been placed in our New Directions Adoption Program here at Smiling Dog Farms.
