Duke has one Sponsor Duke came to Smiling Dog Farms from the state of New York in the Spring of 2010.  He was a very energetic 2 year old when he came to live here. In an effort to curb some of that energy, his owners had taken him to behaviorists and trainers, and he had become a pretty well-mannered dog. He no longer jumped on people, no longer mouthed people, walked nicely on a leash and learned the basic commands like "sit", "down", "wait" and "leave it".  But, for some unknown reason, as he got older he became very aggressive, especially toward his owners.  He bit his mom's hand, breaking a bone which required surgery.  He also bit his uncle and dad.  His aggression was getting more and more unpredictable, but his owners loved him and did not want to put him down.  They contacted Smiling Dog Farms and once he was accepted, they drove him down to the farm from New York. For his first three months here at the farm, Duke was a pretty good boy.  He was always happy and bouncy and would let us play with him and rake his yard.  As you can see, he’s a one-dog demolition derby. It’s hard to keep a bed in his house because he will make it his mission to tear it to shreds. (Just for the record, we don’t think there is such a thing as an indestructible bed!) One day though, as we tried to put Frontline on Duke, he went berserk.  As soon as he was touched with the tube he turned and mauled the person putting it on him.  This was something we did routinely ... the only thing new about it was Duke’s reaction. Needless to say, he now wears a red name tag and is serviced totally from the outside of his play yard. Duke is just one of the many dogs here at the farm that had people who loved them and did not want to put them down.  Instead, they found a safe and secure place for their dogs to live out their lives.  Unfortunately, many of them, like Duke, are not consistently sponsored so their day-to-day costs of care and maintenance are not fully covered.  Please consider sponsoring Duke or making a one-time donation in his name.
