Butters has one Sponsor Butters got a rough start in life. Butters came to Smiling Dog Farms from Michigan. The first few years of his life were spent outside because members of his family had allergies to him and couldn’t let him in the house. Unfortunately, they didn’t spend any time with him outside either.  Because he lived outside and spent so much time alone, he did not get socialized like puppies normally do. He became kind of a brat and thinks of himself as his own boss. He made up his own rules because no one took the time to teach him differently! A kind woman named Melanie saw how Butters was being neglected. She and her husband felt sad for him and offered to take him into their home. They hoped to make up for the neglect by giving him a loving family environment. They quickly learned that, while Butters has his really good points, he also has some behaviors that make it really difficult for him to learn to live by “people rules” instead of “dog rules.” Butters can be very playful and affectionate. He loves to chew on bones, and loves to bury them, sometimes even under the cushions of the couch. He loves to play tug of war, as long as you sometimes let him win. His favorite game is when you throw a blanket or a towel over his head and gently grab his legs or tail. He will twirl around and lay on his back waiting for a belly scratch. Butters loves to be outside and loves to have doggie friends to play with. He dreams about chasing small animals and cats. He gets along best with young dogs or dogs that are submissive. But he also has his difficult side. He does have food aggression and can be very possessive of toys or bones. And he has a tendency to be jealous. When others get too close to his favorite people, Butters will snarl and bite. He is not real fond of people he doesn’t know well. He comes across as a real meanie sometimes. Melanie believes that he is deeply misunderstood and is a truly insecure dog because he was neglected and unloved for so long. He needs positive people around him who help him feel loved and safe and secure. But Butters is too unsocialized, so has not been able to adapt to living with a family. He has just lived by his own rules for too long. So, Melanie and her husband made the decision to find a place for Butters to live where he could be safe and secure and loved ... and be allowed to live by his own rules. They found Smiling Dog Farms and asked Jay and Ricky if Butters could come live at the farm. Of course, they said “yes”. Butters is not adoptable and is a classic Sanctuary dog. Here at the farm, he has his own house and play yard. He still is not fond of humans, but he has a little friend who loves him, and shares his home. They romp and play together in their yard. He has a great time chasing squirrels, chewing bones, and watching all the activity around him. Butters is happy in his new life at the farm! Here he can just relax and be himself!
