Boo has one Sponsor
Boo is a special needs Sanctuary Dog here at Smiling Dog Farms.
Boo is a dog with aggression issues.
But Boo is different from most aggressive dogs. He loves people. He wants to be with
people and he gets attached pretty quickly. He can be the sweetest, most loveable dog. He
looks up at you with those big eyes and your heart breaks.
He is, however, completely unpredictable. He can be the sweetest most loving dog in the
world. Yet there is no telling when he will turn, or why, and when he does, he does not stop.
Boo also has a thyroid issue which the vet said can sometimes cause aggression. The vet
cannot treat him without him being fully sedated. Anyone who takes care of him must never
let their guard down. Boo has to be serviced solely from the outside of his yard, because he
is extremely dangerous when he has one of his spells.
Because he had bitten several people, his owner surrendered him to a shelter. The staff at the shelter were very cautious at first
because of his bite history. Then the more they got to know Boo, the more they saw he was a sweetheart. They became very fond
of him. He never showed any aggression towards them ... until the day one of the workers tried putting a leash on him (which she
had done numerous times before) and, without warning, he attacked. He grabbed her arm and broke it in two places. Fortunately
there was another worker close by who distracted Boo by bringing another dog into the area. It was only then that Boo turned
loose of her arm, to go after the other dog.
Boo also suffers when he attacks. Its traumatizing for him. After he bites, he shakes and drools in his pen. Its heartbreaking. He is
a mess. He just can’t help himself. Boo is not a "bad dog" who doesn't deserve to live. We think he simply can not control himself.
Even after the attack on the shelter employee, the staff at the shelter did not want him to be euthanized. They had become very
attached to him and hoped to find a way to save his life. And that’s when they contacted Smiling Dog Farms.
As part of our regular budget here at Smiling Dog Farms, we try to help shelters by taking a certain number of these unadoptable
and unfunded dogs each year. We know these guys have no "sponsors" and, therefore, no chance at all if we say no. Dogs like
Boo can’t be adopted, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve to live out their lives.
Here at the farm, Boo is the king of his townhome. Sometimes he’s calm and complacent, soaking up the
sunshine and smiling at everyone who walks by ... and some days he’s mean as a rattlesnake with
someone standing on its tail! As far as our Boo is concerned, we never know from one day to the next
what the morning will bring.
But that’s okay. Giving dogs like Boo a second chance is what we’re here for.
